Supreme Court relief sparks fresh political exchange; Congress leader cites Constitution, alleges misuse of power

Guwahati: Congress leader Pawan Khera described the Supreme Court’s decision granting him anticipatory bail as a reaffirmation of constitutional values, while launching a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Reacting after securing relief, Khera said the verdict was “not only a personal victory and a source of relief,” but also a reminder that “as long as we remain a constitutional democracy, personal liberty cannot be sacrificed for political vendetta.” He concluded his statement with “Satyameva Jayate.”
In a detailed message, Khera expressed gratitude to the judiciary and his legal team, stating, “I thank the Supreme Court for upholding the rule of law,” and credited senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi for his role, calling him “truly our Brahmastra.” He further acknowledged the support of Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K.C. Venugopal and Jairam Ramesh, along with party workers who “raised their voices and prayed for me during these challenging times.”
At the same time, Khera criticised the Chief Minister, asserting that “this is not a personal battle” and adding that he “cannot hide behind the police instead of answering questions.”
The case originates from allegations made by Khera regarding multiple passports allegedly linked to the Chief Minister’s wife, following which Assam Police registered charges related to forgery and defamation. While granting relief, the Supreme Court observed that the matter appeared “prima facie politically motivated” and flagged concerns with earlier High Court findings, terming them “erroneous.”
