Authorities have launched emergency erosion control measures after the swollen Disang River weakened a key flood protection embankment
Guwahati: A fresh erosion threat has emerged in Assam’s Sivasagar district after a critical stretch of the Betbari Barpatra Disang embankment came under severe pressure from the swollen Disang River, prompting emergency protection measures.
The erosion has reached the level of the paver blocks along the embankment, raising fears of a possible breach that could expose Sivasagar town and nearby villages to fresh flooding. The development comes as Betbari residents continue to recover from more than 13 days of flooding.
The Water Resources Department has begun emergency erosion control work on a war footing, with local residents joining officials to reinforce the vulnerable stretch. Police personnel have also been deployed on both sides of the embankment to regulate movement and facilitate the ongoing protection work.
Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored as efforts continue to stabilise the embankment and prevent any further escalation of the flood situation.
