Around one lakh families have been affected by floods in Sivasagar, with crops belonging to nearly 60,000 farming families damaged, the minister said
Guwahati: The Assam government is considering alternative cultivation options for farmers affected by the recent floods in Sivasagar, with many unlikely to cultivate during the current season, Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika said on Friday.
Addressing a press conference after reviewing the post-flood situation with Agriculture Minister Bimal Borah and officials from the Agriculture, Horticulture and Irrigation departments, Hazarika said around one lakh families in Sivasagar had been affected by the floods, while agricultural land and crops belonging to nearly 60,000 families had suffered damage.
“Many people may not be able to cultivate their fields this year due to the impact of the floods. Therefore, the state government is considering alternative farming options,” Hazarika said.
The Minister further said the government has already initiated arrangements to supply paddy seeds and seedlings and is also prepared to provide fruit saplings and facilitate Rabi cultivation. Measures will also be taken to restore farmland affected by heavy silt deposition and strengthen irrigation schemes to support long-term recovery.
“Our farmers have endured immense hardship over the past few weeks. Every effort will be made to ensure that they receive timely support and can return to their fields with confidence,” Hazarika said.
