Late-night attack amid post-election tensions raises security concerns; police launch probe into unidentified assailants
Diphu: A suspected petrol bomb attack on the residence of Congress leader Ratan Engti in Assam’s Diphu has triggered concern in the region, even as no injuries or damage were reported.
According to police, unidentified individuals targeted Engti’s house on Monday night by hurling at least six petrol bombs along with two suspected explosive objects. However, none of the devices detonated, thereby preventing any casualties. Engti, who contested the Bokajan constituency and serves as the district Congress committee president, was inside the house with his family at the time and remained unaware of the incident.
The materials were later found in a vegetable garden in front of the residence by local residents on Tuesday morning. Subsequently, the police were alerted, and a team reached the spot to recover the unexploded devices. Officials have initiated an investigation to identify those responsible and ascertain the motive behind the attack.
Meanwhile, the incident has heightened anxiety in the locality, particularly in the aftermath of the recently concluded Assembly elections. Residents expressed concern over rising tensions, prompting security agencies to maintain close surveillance in the area.
The development comes shortly after the BJP-led NDA secured a sweeping victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 102 out of 126 seats, while the Congress managed 19. Observers say the political climate remains sensitive as the state adjusts to the electoral outcome.
