Itanagar: A rare sighting of an adult Oriental pied hornbill in Arunachal Pradesh’s Pasighat has sparked renewed interest among conservationists, as the species reappeared after a significant absence. The bird was recently spotted near the forest office area in East Siang district by local resident Biswajit Tayeng, drawing attention from both officials and wildlife enthusiasts.

Importantly, experts view the development as more than just an isolated sighting. Hornbills are widely regarded as indicators of ecological well-being, and their presence often reflects stable and thriving forest ecosystems. “The return of the hornbill after a prolonged gap suggests that habitat conditions remain favourable,” a forest official noted, highlighting the positive impact of ongoing conservation efforts.

Moreover, the species plays a crucial ecological role. By feeding on fruits and dispersing seeds across large distances, hornbills actively support forest regeneration. For this reason, they are often described as “natural forest growers,” contributing significantly to biodiversity.

Officials further emphasised that such sightings underline the importance of preserving mature trees and undisturbed habitats, which are essential for the species’ nesting and survival. Any disruption to these environments could directly threaten their population.

Reacting to the development, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein expressed optimism, stating that the sighting is a “strong indication of a healthy ecosystem.”
