Terash Gowalla has urged the Prime Minister to order a high-level inquiry, while a regional welfare committee has called for compensation, a safety audit and strict action against those responsible

Guwahati: Rajya Sabha MP Terash Gowalla has approached Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking an independent investigation into the November 6 explosion and fire at Oil India Limited’s (OIL) Intermediate Tank Farm in Tengakhat, Dibrugarh.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Gowalla raised concerns over industrial safety standards and alleged lapses in maintenance, demanding accountability and adequate assistance for affected families.
The MP has sought a central agency-led inquiry, financial compensation for the deceased workers’ families, free medical treatment for the injured, a comprehensive safety audit of OIL installations across the Northeast and employment for one eligible dependent from each deceased worker’s family.
Meanwhile, the Oilfield Protection and Public Welfare Committee (North-East) has demanded an impartial probe by the CBI or NIA, alleging that oil leakage had been reported in the area before the incident. The committee has also demanded compensation of at least Rs 2 crore for each deceased worker’s family.
Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Bikram Kairi said on November 7 that OIL would discuss compensation with affected families in accordance with its agreement with contractor Spectron Engineers Private Limited.
An OIL technical team is also expected to examine the site to determine the cause of the explosion and identify any possible safety lapses.
