Siang Mega Dam Protest March Enters Assam: Draws Support from Organisations in Jonai

Protesters opposing the proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project demand its cancellation, withdrawal of FIRs against 48 youths and dialogue with the government

Dhemaji: An ongoing protest march against the proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP) in Arunachal Pradesh entered Assam’s Dhemaji district on November 6, receiving support from several organisations in Jonai.

The march, organised under the leadership of the Adi Galo Welfare Society, began on November 4 from Geku in Upper Siang district and reached Jonai via Ruksin after passing through various parts of Arunachal Pradesh.

Members of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) and Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti welcomed the protesters and expressed solidarity with their movement.

AJP general secretary Chittaranjan Basumatary criticised the Centre and the Arunachal Pradesh government, warning that the proposed mega dam could severely affect the Siang Valley’s ecology, indigenous livelihoods and cultural heritage.

He questioned the rationale behind the project and called for development alternatives that prioritise agriculture, infrastructure and local interests.

The protesters are demanding cancellation of the project, withdrawal of FIRs against 48 youths, release of detained individuals, removal of security forces from affected villages and peaceful dialogue with the government.

Several organisations in Assam have also pledged support for the movement, signalling growing opposition to the proposed project across the region.
