The Indian fast bowler ends his red-ball career with 229 wickets from 64 Tests, while confirming his intention to continue playing white-ball cricket

New Delhi: Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has announced his retirement from Test cricket, bringing the curtain down on a 13-year career in the longest format of the game.
The 36-year-old made the announcement through an emotional Instagram post on Friday, November 6, exactly 13 years after making his Test debut against the West Indies in Kolkata in 2013.
Shami finished his Test career with 229 wickets in 64 matches, including six five-wicket hauls. His best bowling figures were 6/56, while he maintained an impressive average of 27.71.
Reflecting on his journey, Shami described Test cricket as a deeply special part of his life, thanking his coaches, support staff, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the Cricket Association of Bengal and his fans for their support.
His last Test appearance came in the 2023 World Test Championship final against Australia. He also played a crucial role in India’s bowling attack during the 2023 ODI World Cup, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps.
While stepping away from Test cricket, Shami confirmed that he would continue playing white-ball cricket, including domestic competitions and the Indian Premier League (IPL).
