Assam Congress chief raises questions on electoral process, vows continued engagement inside and outside Assembly after poll setback

Guwahati: Even as the Congress formally accepted the outcome of the Assam Assembly elections, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday asserted that the party would continue to raise concerns over the electoral process and pursue available legal remedies.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said a petition filed by the Congress regarding issues linked to the conduct of elections remains pending before the Supreme Court. He also referred to a no-confidence motion against the Election Commissioner, undertaken jointly by opposition parties, and questioned the functioning of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
“We will use every democratic and legal avenue to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process,” he said, adding that several concerns earlier flagged by Rahul Gandhi on transparency and fairness remain unanswered.
At the same time, Gogoi reiterated that the party respects the public mandate. “We accept the people’s verdict and thank those who supported us,” he said, while noting that the Congress would also engage with voters who did not back the party.
He acknowledged that the results fell short of expectations and described outcomes in several constituencies as “difficult to comprehend.” Nevertheless, he emphasised that the Congress would act as a constructive opposition, offering suggestions for Assam’s development both within and beyond the Assembly.
Gogoi further announced that a meeting of newly elected Congress MLAs would be held on May 9 to chart the party’s future course.
