The CM calls Nagaon a litmus test for the BJP and says a victory could send a strong political message ahead of the 2031 Assembly polls
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma linked the BJP’s prospects in the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election to its larger political ambitions for the 2031 Assembly polls, hinting that an alliance victory could eventually lead to a clean sweep of all 126 seats.
Speaking in Jorhat, the Chief Minister described Nagaon as a “litmus test” for the BJP, given that the constituency has not traditionally been a party stronghold.
The CM further asserted that BJP was leading by more than 50,000 votes in Morigaon, Jagiroad, Raha and Nagaon Assembly segments, but faced challenges in Samaguri, Dhing, Rupohihat and Lahorighat, where it had lost by around 1.5 lakh votes.
The Chief Minister said ministers Keshab Mahanta and Pijush Hazarika, along with MLA Jitu Goswami, were campaigning in Nagaon and claimed the ground situation had improved over the past month. He said a BJP victory would send a strong message ahead of 2031, while indicating confidence in the BJP-led alliance’s prospects.
The Chief Minister also said he would focus on strengthening the BJP, AGP and UPPL alliance rather than engaging in political or social media battles.
