Gaurav Gogoi predicts a Congress victory in Nagaon and accuses BJP and AIUDF of reacting with “panic”
Guwahati: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi expressed confidence that the party would mount a strong campaign and win the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, while accusing the BJP and AIUDF of “panic” following Congress’ candidate selection.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi said Congress was confident of victory in the October 6 bypoll. “We are very confident of putting up a solid campaign, and we are confident of a victory,” he said.
Reacting to AIUDF’s decision to field party president Badruddin Ajmal, Gogoi claimed the party reconsidered its earlier choice after Congress announced former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora as its candidate.
Gogoi also alleged that the BJP had “panicked” after Congress fielded a strong candidate and claimed Ajmal’s candidature would benefit Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Nagaon bypoll is shaping up as a three-way contest between Congress, BJP and AIUDF. BJP has fielded former IAS officer Devasish Sharma, while AIUDF has nominated Ajmal. Gogoi’s remarks about the BJP, AIUDF and Ajmal are political allegations and have not been independently verified.
