Badruddin Ajmal Named AIUDF Candidate for Nagaon By-poll: Three-Way Contest Set

AIUDF names Badruddin Ajmal for the Nagaon bypoll, setting up a three-way contest with BJP and Congress

Nagaon: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) on Tuesday, September 15, named party Binnakandi MLA Badruddin Ajmal as its candidate for the October 6 Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election in Assam.

Ajmal’s candidature was announced a day before the September 16 nomination deadline. The party had earlier indicated that Rezaul Karim Sarkar could contest the seat but ultimately fielded Ajmal.

The announcement sets up a three-way contest with the BJP and Congress. The BJP has nominated former IAS officer Devasish Sharma, who took voluntary retirement before joining the party on September 8, while Congress has fielded former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora.

Polling for the Nagaon bypoll will be held on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9. Candidates can withdraw their nominations until September 19.

With all three major contenders now announced, the Nagaon contest is expected to attract considerable attention as the parties intensify their campaigns ahead of polling.
