BJP to Decide Next Assam CM Soon: Swearing-In Likely After May 11

Central observers appointed as the legislative party set to meet and finalise leadership

Guwahati: A decision on Assam’s next Chief Minister is expected soon, with the Bharatiya Janata Party set to convene its legislative party meeting to formally elect its leader, outgoing CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Wednesday. He confirmed that central observers, including J. P. Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini, have been assigned to oversee the process.

Sarma stated that the leadership choice will emerge from within the legislative party, after which the alliance will approach the Governor to formally stake claim to form the government. “The leader will be decided by the legislative party, and following that, we will return to Lok Bhawan to initiate the government formation process,” he said.

He also indicated that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place after May 11, noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend the event. The timing, he suggested, reflects both scheduling considerations and the significance of the mandate secured by the NDA.

Highlighting the scale of the victory, Sarma described it as a “hat-trick with a century,” underlining the alliance’s strong performance in the Assembly elections.

The developments mark the transition phase following the resignation of the incumbent government, with formalities now underway for the constitution of a new administration in Assam.
