Saikia cites constitutional convention after completion of Himanta Biswa Sarma government’s term ahead of new NDA swearing-in

Guwahati: Devajit Saikia has stepped down as the Advocate General of Assam, bringing to a close a tenure of nearly five years in one of the state’s top constitutional posts.
Saikia submitted his resignation on Wednesday, shortly after the completion of the term of the outgoing government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma. Explaining his decision, he said the move was made in keeping with the “high tradition and constitutional practice” associated with the office.
Sharing the development publicly, Saikia described his tenure as a matter of “immense honour and privilege” and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the state in a key legal and constitutional capacity.
He also thanked the Chief Minister, the Council of Ministers, members of the legal fraternity, fellow advocates, government officials, and colleagues for their cooperation and trust throughout his tenure.
His resignation comes during the transition phase following the Assembly elections, with the BJP-led NDA government in Assam set to begin its new term with a swearing-in ceremony on May 12.
Saikia played a significant role in handling major constitutional and legal matters for the Assam government during his time as Advocate General.
