Tripura CM Launches ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ to Promote Sustainable Farming

Chief Minister Manik Saha says the initiative encourages organic energy-dependent agriculture while emphasising environmental responsibility and long-term sustainability for future generations

Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has launched the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’, a Government of India initiative aimed at promoting sustainable, organic energy-dependent agriculture and encouraging environmentally responsible farming practices across the state.

Speaking at the inaugural session of a one-day workshop held at the Bamutia Berimura School premises, Saha said the campaign has been introduced under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to strengthen India’s agriculture sector while supporting the country’s farm-dependent economy.

Highlighting the changing priorities in agriculture, the Chief Minister said farming should not be driven solely by economic gains through the use of chemicals but must also reflect responsibility towards protecting the environment and securing the future of coming generations.

“Today’s agriculture is not just reliant on chemicals for economic gains; intertwined with it is responsibility and accountability for the future,” Saha said while addressing participating farmers.

He urged farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and stressed that organic farming plays a vital role in preserving soil health, conserving natural resources and ensuring long-term agricultural productivity.

The workshop was organised as part of the nationwide campaign to raise awareness about eco-friendly farming methods and encourage greater adoption of sustainable agricultural techniques. Officials said the initiative seeks to reduce dependence on chemical-intensive farming while promoting practices that improve environmental sustainability and strengthen rural livelihoods.

The Chief Minister also encouraged farmers to actively participate in the campaign and embrace modern yet environmentally conscious agricultural methods, describing sustainable farming as essential for ensuring food security, ecological balance and the long-term prosperity of India’s agricultural sector.
