The state sent 1,000 kg of certified organic honey through a farmer producer organisation as Tripura expands its international market for agricultural products
Agartala: Tripura has exported 1,000 kg of organically produced honey to the United Arab Emirates for the first time, Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said.
Nath flagged off the consignment during an International Organic Buyer-Seller Meet organised by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) in Agartala.
The honey was exported through a farmer producer organisation with support from the Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Horticulture departments. “Earlier, we had exported organic honey to other states, but we had not exported it to a foreign country. This is the first time, through an FPO, that we have exported organic honey to the UAE,” Nath said.
The minister said Tripura has made significant progress in organic farming, with around 47,000 farmers currently engaged in the sector and 26,000 hectares under organic cultivation. Before 2018, only around 2,000 hectares were under organic cultivation. Nath said products including Queen Pineapple, Sabri Banana, scented lemon, jackfruit, turmeric and ginger have strong market demand.
The buyer-seller meet featured technical sessions involving international buyers from nine countries, including New Zealand, Australia, Egypt, South Korea, Italy, Germany and the Philippines.
