Assamese filmmaker Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap wins the Secret Program Fellini Award at Italy’s Lucania Film Festival for Kok Kok Kokoook

Guwahati: Assamese filmmaker Maharshi Tuhin Kashyap has won the Secret Program Fellini Award at the 27th Lucania Film Festival in Pisticci, Italy, for his debut feature Kok Kok Kokoook. Named after legendary filmmaker Federico Fellini, the award recognises distinctive contributions to world cinema.
The film was selected for the festival’s Secret Program, curated by Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, who presented the award to Kashyap.
The European premiere follows the film’s world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival, along with screenings at the International Film Festival of Kerala and Dhaka International Film Festival.
Made as Kashyap’s graduation project at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, Kok Kok Kokoook follows Siken, a migrant chicken seller whose RX100 motorcycle disappears. Fearing police trouble, he becomes increasingly distressed before undergoing a surreal transformation into the motorcycle itself. Combining magic realism and social commentary, the film examines contemporary politics, migration and vulnerability in Assam and India.
Kashyap’s earlier short film The Horse From Heaven was an official entry at the 2023 Oscars, while Flowers In A Hailstorm premiered at Japan’s Nara International Film Festival.
