MLAs took oath in multiple languages on the opening day of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly after the NDA’s 102-seat victory

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday took oath as a member of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, marking his sixth consecutive term representing the Jalukbari constituency.
Protem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary administered the oath as the proceedings of the new Assembly session began. The Chief Minister took the oath in Assamese along with several legislators from both treasury and opposition benches.
Before the swearing-in process started, Patowary informed members that they could choose any recognised language for taking oath and submit copies to the Assembly Secretariat. Subsequently, MLAs took oath in Assamese, Bengali, Bodo and Sanskrit, reflecting the linguistic diversity of the House.
The session commenced days after the NDA secured a sweeping mandate in the Assam Assembly elections. The BJP-led alliance, comprising the BJP, AGP and BPF, returned to power with 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly.
The BJP emerged with 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and BPF won 10 seats each. In the opposition camp, Congress secured 19 seats, followed by Raijor Dal with two seats, while AIUDF and Trinamool Congress won two and one seat respectively.
Sharing his reaction after taking oath, the Chief Minister wrote on X, “Truly humbled to take oath as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly for the 6th consecutive term… It is an honour to serve in this august House.”
