Assam CM Launches India’s First AI-Powered ‘Phygital’ Bank Branch in Guwahati

Slice Small Finance Bank’s new GS Road branch combines AI-driven digital services with physical banking to improve financial access for small businesses and underserved communities

Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 16 inaugurated India’s first AI-powered ‘phygital‘ banking branch in Guwahati, describing the initiative as a major step towards technology-led financial inclusion.

The next-generation branch, launched by Slice Small Finance Bank on GS Road, integrates physical banking services with advanced digital systems, including AI-enabled self-service kiosks, paperless cash deposits and withdrawals, and simplified onboarding processes.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma said the project reflects Assam’s growing focus on attracting innovation-driven investments and creating a more inclusive financial ecosystem for both urban and underserved populations.

“This initiative will enable small traders and women entrepreneurs to secure working capital within minutes using their mobile phones,” the chief minister said, highlighting the branch’s UPI-linked credit access system that removes the need for separate loan applications.

According to the bank, the ‘phygital‘ model is designed to improve accessibility, convenience and responsible banking services for individuals and small businesses with limited access to modern financial infrastructure.

Sarma further said the collaboration between the Assam government and Slice Small Finance Bank represents a meaningful partnership that could strengthen entrepreneurship and digital banking adoption across the state.

The government, he added, remains committed to building a business-friendly environment while ensuring citizens benefit from modern financial technologies.
