From First-Time MLA to Chief Minister: Himanta Completes 25 Years in Public Service

As Himanta Biswa Sarma began his second term as Assam Chief Minister, the BJP leader reflected on his 25-year political journey and thanked the people of Jalukbari for their unwavering trust

Guwahati: From a first-time MLA in 2001 as a representative of Jalukbari, to becoming the face of Assam’s BJP-led political era, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday, April 13, completed 25 years in electoral politics while taking oath for a second term as Chief Minister.

In an emotional message shared on social media, the Chief Minister described his public journey as“25 years of Anant Sewa”, recalling how he first entered the Assam Assembly in 2001 with the blessings of Maa Kamakhya and the support of the people of Jalukbari.

“Being able to serve them has been my greatest honour” the Chief Minister wrote, while reaffirming his commitment to continue working for Assam and its people.

The moment carried both political and personal significance for the BJP leader, who also began work on the NDA government’s third consecutive term in Assam on the same day. Calling the new phase NDA 3.0, the Chief Minister said the government would focus on building a stronger and more prosperous Assam.

The Jalukbari legislator’s political rise has closely mirrored Assam’s changing political landscape over the last two decades. After losing the seat to former AGP stalwart Bhrigu Kumar Phukan in 1996, he made a breakthrough in 2001 by defeating the veteran leader and entering the Assembly for the first time. Since then, he has remained undefeated in the constituency, winning six consecutive elections across both the Congress and BJP.

Born in 1969, the Chief Minister studied at Cotton College, where he served as general secretary of the students’ union during 1991-92. He later completed his law degree and practised as an advocate at the Gauhati High Court before fully entering public life.

Over the years, the Chief Minister have handled several major departments, including Health, Education, Finance and Agriculture, and earned recognition for implementing large-scale reforms in governance and healthcare.

Consequently, he resigned from the Congress in 2015 and joined the BJP in the presence of Amit Shah, a move that significantly reshaped Assam politics.

Himanta first became Chief Minister in 2021 and has now returned to office with a stronger mandate after the NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. Calling the launch of “NDA 3.0” deeply personal, he said his government would continue striving to fulfil the aspirations of Assam’s people and contribute to the progress of the nation.
