Priyada Gogoi, who became a symbol of determination by campaigning for her jailed son during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, passed away in Guwahati after a prolonged illness

Guwahati: Priyada Gogoi, the mother of Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi, passed away in Guwahati on Wednesday morning after battling age-related health complications. She was 96.
Family members said she breathed her last at around 6:20 am while undergoing treatment. Her death has drawn condolences from political leaders, supporters and well-wishers across Assam.
Her mortal remains are being taken to Selenghat near Mariani in Jorhat district, where family members, relatives and supporters will gather for the final rites.
Beyond being known as Akhil Gogoi’s mother, Priyada Gogoi earned public admiration for her unwavering support during one of the most challenging phases of her son’s political career. During the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, when Akhil Gogoi contested the Sivasagar seat while imprisoned in connection with anti-CAA cases, she emerged as a prominent face of his campaign.
Despite being in her nineties, she travelled extensively, met voters and appealed for support for her son’s candidature. Her efforts resonated across the constituency and became a powerful symbol of determination and resilience.
Akhil Gogoi eventually secured a decisive victory from Sivasagar and later emerged as a leading opposition voice in the Assam Assembly.
With her passing, Assam bids farewell to a woman whose quiet strength and steadfast commitment left a lasting mark on the state’s political landscape.
