Backed by Centre and Assam government, the three-year initiative aims to raise Muga silk prices beyond Rs 50,000 per kg, support 8,000 households and strengthen the entire value chain

New Delhi: The Centre and the Assam government unveiled Mission Senehjori, a Rs 411-crore flagship programme aimed at revitalising Assam’s iconic Muga silk industry and positioning it as a premium global textile brand.
Launched in the presence of Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, the mission seeks to strengthen every stage of the Muga value chain while directly benefiting over 8,000 households and supporting the broader ecosystem of nearly 2.6 lakh rearers and weavers across the state.
A major objective of the initiative is to significantly improve farmer incomes. Currently, Muga silk fetches around Rs 25,000 per kilogram at the farmgate level. Through enhanced processing, branding, quality assurance and market access, the government aims to push returns beyond Rs 50,000 per kilogram.
The mission will also tackle long-standing challenges such as product adulteration and misuse of the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. To ensure authenticity, authorities plan to introduce QR-based GI verification and digital traceability systems.
Calling the initiative a collaborative model, Scindia said, “This is not a conventional government project. Multiple stakeholders have come together to build a sustainable future for Muga silk.”
Over the next three years, the project will establish modern reeling units, a spun silk mill in Dhemaji, Common Facility Centres, training institutes, a Design Innovation Lab in Sualkuchi and a Silk Tourism Park in Dhakuakhana.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described the launch as a landmark step, saying the mission would connect Assam’s centuries-old silk heritage with global markets while creating fresh opportunities for rural livelihoods and entrepreneurship.
