Gogoi Questions Akhil Gogoi’s Political Stand Amid Growing Opposition Rifts

Assam Congress chief says Raijor Dal’s recent remarks are creating confusion within the opposition camp after Assembly poll results

Guwahati: Cracks within Assam’s opposition bloc appeared to deepen on Friday after Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi openly criticised recent remarks made by Akhil Gogoi, suggesting that the Raijor Dal leader’s political tone was beginning to mirror that of the ruling BJP.

Speaking to reporters, Gogoi said the Congress was “disappointed” with Akhil Gogoi’s statements and claimed that his comments resembled the narrative used by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma before and after the elections. “His public behaviour is raising doubts among people,” he remarked.

At the same time, the Congress leader reaffirmed that the party’s alliance with Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), and APHCL remained intact. However, he hinted that Raijor Dal may be distancing itself from the wider opposition front.

Gogoi also said the Congress was reviewing its electoral performance while preparing to strengthen its role as the principal opposition party in the state. He accused the BJP government of ignoring major public concerns, including artificial floods, alleged syndicate activities, and a lack of opportunities for young people. “People have given them the mandate to govern; they should focus on that responsibility,” he said.

The Congress MP further alleged that Raijor Dal was increasingly targeting fellow opposition parties instead of functioning like a united opposition force, adding, “It appears he has already decided his political direction.”
