The Congress leader joined the investigation after receiving Supreme Court protection from arrest in the politically sensitive case involving allegations against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma
Guwahati: Congress leader Pawan Khera on April 13, appeared before the Guwahati Crime Branch for questioning in connection with a case arising from allegations he had made against Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Khera arrived at the Crime Branch office along with his legal team after being summoned by investigators. The case stems from claims made by the Congress leader regarding alleged foreign assets and multiple passports linked to Riniki Bhuyan Sarma. She had strongly denied the accusations earlier, calling them “false” and politically motivated.
Subsequently, Assam Police registered a case against Khera under multiple charges, including defamation, forgery and criminal conspiracy. The matter later moved through several courts amid a high-profile legal battle.
On April 10, the Telangana High Court granted Khera interim transit bail. The Supreme Court later directed him to seek legal relief from the appropriate court in Assam. While the Gauhati High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea on April 24, the Supreme Court granted him anticipatory bail on April 30, taking note of concerns surrounding the political backdrop of the case.
Speaking outside the Crime Branch office, Congress legal representative Reetam Singh said Khera was fully cooperating with the investigation and responding to queries raised by officials. He also stated that investigators were examining the documents and material linked to the allegations.
Senior Congress leader Ripun Bora said Khera had complied with the Supreme Court’s directions by joining the probe and travelled from Delhi specifically for the questioning.
