Six-time MLA and senior BJP leader will oversee oath-taking proceedings of newly elected legislators before the election of a full-time Speaker

Guwahati: Senior BJP leader and Tihu MLA Chandramohan Patowary is set to be appointed as the Pro-tem Speaker of the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, marking yet another significant responsibility in his long political career.
Patowary remains one of the most experienced legislators in the Assembly and has been elected to the House for the sixth time. A prominent political figure in Assam, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2014 after parting ways with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), where he had earlier built much of his political foundation.
The appointment comes as part of the constitutional process followed after the formation of a new Assembly. Traditionally, the role of Pro-tem Speaker is entrusted to the senior-most legislator to ensure the smooth functioning of the House during its initial proceedings.
As Pro-tem Speaker, Patowary will first take oath from the Governor before presiding over the swearing-in ceremony of all newly elected MLAs. He will also conduct the proceedings of the Assembly until a permanent Speaker is formally elected.
His appointment assumes significance as the BJP-led NDA government begins its third consecutive term in Assam following a decisive mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections.
With decades of legislative and administrative experience behind him, Patowary is expected to play a key role in guiding the House through its opening sessions with procedural stability and political maturity.
