IMD Issues 72-Hour Rain Alert for Assam: Early Monsoon Triggers Flood Concerns

Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds are likely; authorities warn of waterlogging and localised landslides

Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a 72-hour alert for Assam, forecasting spells of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds across several districts. The warning comes as the southwest monsoon has advanced earlier than usual, already influencing weather patterns in the Northeast.

According to officials, an upper air cyclonic circulation over northeast Assam, along with another system over adjoining Bangladesh, is driving the current conditions. As a result, widespread rainfall is expected over the next three days, with isolated areas likely to experience intense downpours and wind speeds reaching up to 40–50 kmph.

The early arrival of the monsoon, which reached Kerala ahead of schedule, has accelerated rainfall activity in the region. In the past 24 hours, parts of Guwahati recorded significant precipitation, with areas like Khanapara receiving over 215 mm of rainfall, indicating a severe wet spell.

Meanwhile, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority has cautioned that continued rainfall could worsen urban flooding, disrupt traffic, and trigger landslides in vulnerable zones. “People should remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain,” officials advised.

In Guwahati and nearby areas, cloudy skies with intermittent showers are expected to persist, while temperatures are likely to hover between 30°C and 33°C.

Authorities have activated emergency response systems and intensified monitoring in flood-prone locations. Residents, particularly in low-lying and hillside areas, have been urged to follow official advisories and take precautionary measures as the situation evolves.
