Blaze at HPCL Rajasthan Refinery in Balotra contained; no casualties reported as emergency teams respond swiftly

Rajasthan: A major fire erupted on Sunday at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) Rajasthan Refinery complex in Balotra, Rajasthan, just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the project. The incident triggered an immediate emergency response, with nearly 20 fire tenders deployed to bring the situation under control.
Officials confirmed that the blaze originated in one section of the refinery, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky. However, authorities acted quickly to evacuate the area as a precautionary measure, ensuring that no injuries or casualties were reported.
The refinery, operated by HPCL in partnership with the Rajasthan government, is one of India’s most ambitious energy projects. With an investment of approximately Rs 79,450 crore and a refining capacity of 9 MMTPA, the facility is expected to significantly boost fuel production, strengthen energy security, and generate employment in the region.
Importantly, the project has been positioned as a key industrial milestone and is often referred to as the “Gem of the Desert.” While the fire has raised concerns, officials have not yet indicated whether it will impact the scheduled inauguration.
Meanwhile, firefighting teams managed to contain the blaze, and cooling operations are underway to prevent any flare-ups. Authorities are also expected to conduct a detailed assessment to determine the cause of the incident.
