From Melody to Measurement: Study Unravels Zubeen Garg’s Iconic Hum

A study published in the Journal of Voice decodes the acoustic qualities of Zubeen Garg’s signature humming, offering scientific insight into one of Assamese music’s most cherished vocal trademarks

Guwahati: For decades, Zubeen Garg’s voice has transcended genres and generations, with his signature humming becoming one of the most recognisable elements of Assamese music. Now, a scientific study has shed light on what makes that distinctive vocal expression so captivating.

Published in the internationally acclaimed Journal of Voice, the research presents a detailed acoustic analysis of Garg’s humming style, translating an artistic hallmark into measurable scientific data. The findings were shared by his wife, Garima Garg, through a social media post on Saturday.

Using advanced tools commonly employed in vocal science and laryngology, researchers examined parameters such as jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio (HNR) and timbral characteristics. The study found that Garg’s humming exhibits remarkable vocal stability, a comparatively lower fundamental frequency and unique tonal textures that contribute to its calming and emotionally engaging quality.

Researchers noted statistically significant acoustic patterns that distinguish his humming from conventional singing styles, helping explain why it resonates so strongly with listeners.

Published by the official journal of The Voice Foundation and the International Association of Phonosurgery, the study is believed to be among the first scientific efforts to systematically examine Zubeen Garg’s vocal signature.

Conducted independently by researchers from the Department of Physics at Sadiya Girls’ College, the work not only advances voice science and musicology but also serves as a tribute to an artist whose voice continues to shape Assam’s cultural identity on a global stage.
