Violence erupts in Thinungei; security tightened as protests intensify and roads remain blocked

Imphal: Fresh unrest gripped parts of Manipur on Tuesday after clashes broke out in the Thinungei area of Bishnupur district, leaving at least six people injured and prompting authorities to impose an indefinite curfew.
The restrictions were enforced under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, as officials moved swiftly to contain the situation.
Tensions escalated around midday when confrontations erupted between security personnel and protesters. While locals alleged that tear gas and live rounds were used, authorities had yet to officially confirm the nature of force deployed. Some demonstrators claimed the situation intensified after they intercepted vehicles they suspected were carrying arms.
Amid the chaos, at least one vehicle was reportedly set ablaze, and protesters continued to block key roads, severely disrupting movement. Eyewitnesses said vehicles were being stopped and checked by groups on the ground, adding to the volatile atmosphere.
Security presence has since been reinforced, with additional forces, including the Rapid Action Force, deployed to restore order.
State Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam appealed for calm, urging patience as investigations into the recent Tronglaobi blast continue. “Such incidents require time to investigate thoroughly,” he said, assuring that authorities are acting on public concerns.
He also noted that steps are underway to dismantle certain illegal camps linked to the banned United National Liberation Front, in accordance with existing peace agreements.
