Congress leader launches campaign in key districts, unveils five guarantees while attacking rivals on governance, economy, and democracy

West Bengal: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, on April 14, launched his party’s 2026 West Bengal Assembly election campaign with rallies in Raiganj, Malda, and Murshidabad, marking his first major outreach in the state in years.
The Congress leader mounted a sharp attack on both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), accusing them of governance failures and undermining democratic institutions.
In a strong remark, Gandhi alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was operating under the influence of Donald Trump. “The key to crucial decisions lies with Trump… he pulls the strings,” Gandhi claimed, linking it to trade and foreign policy decisions. He argued that recent agreements could harm Indian farmers and restrict India’s autonomy in buying fuel from countries like Iran and Russia.
Targeting the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he said their “hatred-driven ideology” was weakening the Constitution. “Our belief is in love and unity… that is how the country moves forward,” he added.
Gandhi also criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led government over unemployment and corruption, citing scams such as Saradha and Rose Valley, and alleging a “syndicate system” hurting ordinary citizens.
Outlining Congress’s agenda, he presented five guarantees: Rs 10 lakh health cover, free education up to graduation, Rs 15,000 annual aid for farmers with subsidised power, job creation with internships, and Rs 2,000 monthly support for women.
Calling the election a battle of ideologies, Gandhi urged voters to back Congress for “justice, opportunity, and accountability.”
