The Congress MP was summoned after his name reportedly surfaced during questioning in the case involving remarks on CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife

Guwahati: Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala on Saturday failed to appear before the Assam Crime Branch despite being summoned for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation involving Congress leader Pawan Khera.
The inquiry is linked to controversial statements allegedly made regarding Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, following which legal proceedings were initiated against Khera.
According to officials, Surjewala had been asked to appear before investigators after his name reportedly surfaced during the earlier questioning of Khera. Sources associated with the probe said investigators are examining multiple aspects of the allegations and statements connected to the case.
The Crime Branch has registered the case over accusations that false claims were made against the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The investigation also includes charges related to defamation and alleged forgery.
Officials confirmed that Khera continues to cooperate with the investigation under conditions laid down by the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, the Crime Branch is expected to decide its next course of action after Surjewala’s absence from Saturday’s scheduled appearance.
The controversy originated from allegations raised by Congress leaders concerning purported foreign assets and passport-related details linked to Riniki Bhuyan Sharma. Authorities said the investigation remains active and further questioning may follow as the probe progresses.
