A day after violent clashes in Delhi, the CJP said it will suspend further marches to avoid more injuries, while Wangchuk vowed to continue his hunger strike and police launched legal action over the violence
New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest entered its 24th day on Tuesday, with activist Sonam Wangchuk continuing his indefinite hunger strike and the organisation announcing that it will not hold another Parliament march to prevent further injuries to protesters.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke continued his sit-in at Jantar Mantar, while the group alleged that Monday’s meeting with Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda was a “trap”, claiming its representatives were held back as police cracked down on protesters.
Delhi Police have registered five FIRs in connection with the violence that erupted during Monday’s “Chalo Parliament” march, alleging stone-pelting and damage to public property. The clashes reportedly left more than 180 people injured, including police personnel and protesters.
The issue also triggered a political storm, with Opposition leaders meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and demanding a discussion on what they described as the “brutality unleashed” on students during the protest. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also accused the Centre of targeting the country’s youth and sought an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
