Senior BJP leader A L Hek says Union Home Minister Amit Shah has backed the move, while key UDP demands will be pursued by the BJP
New Delhi: Senior BJP leader A L Hek on Wednesday confirmed that the proposed move of eight United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs to the BJP is final, saying Union Home Minister Amit Shah has given a clear signal on the development.
Hek said he had met Shah one-on-one and was told that the move was final. He added that the BJP would support the demands raised by the UDP legislators, including consideration of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) in place of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and inclusion of the Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
However, Hek declined to comment on the legislators’ internal demands or negotiations, saying those discussions were being handled at the national level.
On speculation over power-sharing and the Deputy Chief Minister’s post, Hek said such decisions rested with the top leadership and the Chief Minister. He also said he could not provide a date for the formal joining but maintained that it would happen. Hek added that Shah had indicated plans to visit Meghalaya, with official communication expected later.
Looking ahead to the 2028 Assembly elections, Hek said, “2028 it will be BJP-led government in Meghalaya, simple.”
