Residents of five villages in Dibrugarh’s Tingkhong constituency claim around 60 to 70 families have been left out of the electoral roll ahead of the September Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council elections
Guwahati: Residents of five villages in Assam’s Dibrugarh district have alleged that their names have been excluded from the electoral roll for the upcoming Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council (SKAC) elections, despite possessing all the required documents.
The affected villages are Dirai Alikinar, Dikcham Block, No. 2 Barbil (Thekeraguri), Longboi and Powali Baghmara under the Tingkhong constituency. Residents claimed that members of around 60 to 70 families have been left out of the voters’ list, effectively denying them the right to vote in the September council elections.
They alleged that repeated appeals to notify the five villages under the Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council have gone unanswered. According to the residents, the absence of notified status has not only resulted in their exclusion from the electoral roll but may also deprive future generations of educational, agricultural and livelihood benefits available through the council.
The villagers have appealed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Tingkhong MLA Bimal Bora and Sonowal Kachari Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tongkeshwar Sonowal to notify the villages and ensure all eligible residents are included in the electoral roll before the elections.
