ATSA Enforces Indefinite Road Blockade Over Alleged Illegal Quarrying in Nazira

Protesters demand an eviction drive and an immediate halt to stone extraction in the tea garden area

Nazira: An indefinite road blockade has been enforced at Bihubar–Augurijan under Nazira by the Assam Tea Tribal Students’ Association (ATSA), intensifying protests over alleged illegal activities in the area.

The agitation, led by ATSA’s Nazira unit, seeks urgent intervention to stop what the organisation describes as unauthorised stone quarrying inside the Bihubar Augurijan Tea Garden. Protesters have made it clear that the blockade will continue until authorities initiate eviction measures and shut down the extraction operations.

ATSA representatives stated that they have already submitted a memorandum to the local administration, outlining their demands. They alleged that large-scale quarrying is being carried out in the disputed Assam–Nagaland border belt, with “business interests working alongside organised networks” to extract stone. According to the group, sections of the tea garden have been cleared, including the cutting of tea bushes, to facilitate these activities.

Furthermore, the association claimed that the situation has worsened due to the presence of armed elements from across the border. “Earlier attempts to set up a border outpost were resisted, which weakened administrative control,” a representative said.

Despite repeated complaints, ATSA alleged that no effective action has been taken so far. Therefore, the organisation warned that the blockade will remain in place until concrete steps are taken to restore order and protect the area.
