Memorandum flags killings in Ukhrul, calls for global attention and accountability

Dimapur: The Naga Students Federation (NSF) has approached the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), drawing attention to alleged human rights violations and rising insecurity in Naga-inhabited regions.
The memorandum was addressed to UNHRC President Sidharto Reza Suryodipuro, signed by NSF president Mteisuding and general secretary Kenilo Kent. The federation highlighted a recent incident on April 18 at TM-Kasom village along NH-202 in Manipur’s Ukhrul district, where two Naga civilians were killed in an ambush. It described the attack as part of a larger and continuing pattern of violence affecting the region.
The NSF noted that such incidents are not isolated, pointing to recurring reports of arson, intimidation, and targeted attacks in Naga areas over the past few years. It further raised concerns about land-related disputes, the spread of illegal poppy cultivation, and the increasing presence of arms, which it said have deepened tensions.
Through the memorandum, the federation urged the UNHRC to “take cognisance of the situation” and push for accountability. It also called for stronger safeguards for indigenous communities and support for peaceful conflict resolution mechanisms.
Meanwhile, the submission coincided with a candlelight vigil held at NSF Oking in Kohima on April 23, where members paid tribute to the victims and expressed solidarity with affected families.
