State eyes eco-adventure, river tourism and local livelihoods through integrated model

Itanagar: In a strategic push to elevate its tourism profile, the Arunachal Pradesh government has proposed transforming the Subansiri Lower Pondage into a high-end destination centred on river and mountain experiences.
The plan aims to blend eco-tourism, adventure activities, and cultural immersion within a sustainable framework built around the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project. Notably, the 2,000 MW project, the largest of its kind in India on the Subansiri River, is expected to be fully operational by December 2026, with four units already functional.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu has sought support from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while also urging coordinated involvement from multiple central ministries to ensure seamless execution.
According to officials, the proposed model includes water sports, eco-friendly travel circuits, cultural tourism, fisheries-based livelihoods, and luxury river cruises. Drawing inspiration from global destinations such as Lake Como and Milford Sound, the state aims to position the site as an internationally competitive attraction.
Importantly, the government has emphasised the role of indigenous communities as both stakeholders and custodians of the region’s ecological and cultural heritage.
Estimates suggest the project could generate over 2,500 jobs and attract nearly 1.5 lakh tourists annually. In the initial phase, expert agencies will prepare a Detailed Project Report, incorporating financial planning and local consultations.
Overall, the initiative seeks to turn hydropower infrastructure into a driver of sustainable tourism and economic growth.
