ASSEB Announces Major School Reforms: 49 Schools Face Action

Board outlines stricter evaluation norms, skill-focused curriculum, and structural changes from 2027

Guwahati: The Higher Secondary results, the Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) unveiled a wide-ranging reform plan aimed at tightening academic standards and reshaping the state’s education system.

Addressing the media, Chairman R.C. Jain said the board is considering withdrawing affiliation of 49 schools due to “consistently poor performance.” At the same time, 102 government and 207 private schools have been flagged for unsatisfactory HSLC results, prompting stricter monitoring.

In a significant shift, students failing in more than two subjects will no longer be eligible for compartment exams and must take fresh admission. However, those who clear individual subjects will receive skill certificates, signalling a move towards integrating vocational learning.

The board also confirmed that answer script re-evaluation will begin within two days. Meanwhile, the re-admission portal for unsuccessful candidates will open after two weeks.

Aligning with Central Board of Secondary Education standards, ASSEB has made 33% marks in each subject mandatory to pass. Additionally, vocational exams will be redesigned after this year under a new framework.

Looking ahead, the Higher Secondary system will be streamlined into Arts, Science and Commerce from 2027. Notably, Arts students must choose at least one skill-based subject, making vocational education partly compulsory. General Studies will also become mandatory across streams.

The board has also announced that quotes from Assamese icon Zubeen Garg will feature in the academic calendar.
