Manipur Issues Media Advisory: Warns Against Unverified Reporting Amid Tensions

State urges adherence to journalistic norms, flags risks of misinformation and unlawful content

Imphal: Amid ongoing law and order concerns, the Manipur Home Department has issued a detailed advisory calling on media organisations to exercise caution and uphold professional standards in their reporting.

The government has raised alarm over the increasing circulation of unverified information, particularly statements and press releases allegedly issued by banned or unauthorised groups. It warned that publishing such material without verification can “create panic, spread misinformation, and disturb public order.”

Referring to the guidelines set by the Press Council of India, the advisory directs editors and journalists to verify all sensitive information before publication. Reports relating to bandhs, threats, or directives from unlawful organisations must be handled with strict scrutiny and proper context.

Furthermore, authorities have clearly stated that content originating from banned or unrecognised groups should not be published unless it serves a clear public interest and is responsibly presented. The advisory also cautions against sensational or provocative reporting, noting that such coverage could harm communal harmony.

In addition, the department has prohibited any form of reporting that glorifies illegal activities or promotes anti-social elements. It emphasised that media platforms must not be misused for coercion or the spread of unlawful narratives.

“The media must act as a responsible stakeholder in maintaining peace and stability,” the advisory noted, adding that violations will invite legal action under applicable laws. The directive has taken immediate effect across the state.
