Survey underway across 250 tea gardens as the Assam government expands its land rights programme for tea workers after distributing pattas to over 28,800 families in the first phase
Guwahati: The Assam government has announced that around 1.14 lakh tea workers’ families will receive land ownership rights under the second phase of its land patta distribution programme, expanding the initiative to 250 tea gardens across the state.
Replying to a question raised by Congress MLA Asif Mohammad Nazar in the Assam Legislative Assembly on Monday, Tea Tribes and Adivasi Welfare Minister Rameswar Teli said the government is implementing the scheme in phases to provide land ownership rights to tea garden workers residing in labour lines within tea estate premises.
Teli informed the House that 28,831 families across 106 tea gardens received land pattas during the first phase of the programme. He added that the second phase will benefit nearly 1.14 lakh families, with survey work currently underway to facilitate the distribution process.
The initiative was formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 13, when he ceremonially handed over land pattas to three beneficiary families, marking the beginning of the state’s effort to provide legal ownership rights to tea garden workers.
The programme aims to improve the socio-economic security of tea workers by granting them legal ownership of the land on which they have lived for generations. Once completed, the second phase will significantly expand land rights coverage across Assam’s tea estates.
