The state has rolled out extensive arrangements, including traffic curbs, special accommodation, ferry services and enhanced sanitation measures ahead of the four-day religious congregation

Guwahati: The Assam government has put in place an elaborate plan for Ambubachi Mela 2026, with authorities expecting close to eight lakh devotees and visitors to converge at the Kamakhya Temple during the annual four-day festival.
Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog said dedicated accommodation facilities have been set up through three major camps to host pilgrims arriving from across the country. Road resurfacing and carpeting works have also been undertaken to improve access to the Nilachal Hills.
Special emphasis has been placed on sanitation, food safety and assistance for elderly devotees and persons with disabilities. An extensive public address system has been installed to provide real-time information and help regulate crowds.
A comprehensive traffic plan has also been drawn up. According to DCP (Traffic) Jayanta Sarathi Borah, vehicles will not be allowed beyond Nursery Point, except for emergency services. Trucks carrying essential supplies will be permitted only between 11 pm and 5 am.
To ease congestion, ferry services will operate through the Pandu route, while shuttle services will run from Sonaram School Playground to the temple.
Tourism Commissioner and Secretary Diganta Barah said devotees will be allowed to proceed towards the shrine from 5 am to 6 pm daily. He also warned that consumption of alcohol or narcotic substances within the mela zone would invite legal action.
Officials expressed confidence that coordinated efforts by multiple departments would ensure a safe and seamless pilgrimage experience.
