Assam Gears Up For 1 Crore Sapling Drive With 35 Lakh Women Participants

State launches one of its largest green campaigns for World Environment Day as Atul Bora reviews preparations and calls for widespread public participation

Guwahati: The Assam government is gearing up for one of its biggest environmental initiatives, with a target of planting 1 crore saplings across the state on June 5, marking World Environment Day. The campaign will involve more than 35 lakh women associated with Self-Help Groups (SHGs), making it one of the largest community-led plantation drives in the region.

Reviewing preparations in Guwahati, Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Atul Bora said the initiative reflects the government’s focus on ecological conservation and sustainable development.

“As part of our commitment to maintaining ecological balance, over 35 lakh women SHG members will participate in a drive aimed at planting 1 crore saplings across Assam,” Bora said.

The minister highlighted that the state has consistently pursued environmental protection through afforestation programmes, forest restoration projects, clean energy promotion and the adoption of technology-driven conservation measures.

To ensure smooth implementation, Bora chaired a high-level review meeting with officials from the Panchayat and Rural Development Department and the Environment and Forest Department. He directed authorities to strengthen coordination, monitoring and public outreach to maximise participation and ensure effective execution of the campaign.

The meeting also reviewed ongoing rural development initiatives, including the Lakhpati Baideo Programme.

Officials said the plantation drive is expected to significantly boost green cover while encouraging community participation in environmental stewardship, reinforcing Assam’s broader sustainability goals.
