After its BAFTA success, Lakshmipriya Devi’s acclaimed film wins three major awards at the New York Indian Film Festival, elevating Manipuri cinema on the global stage
Imphal: Manipuri cinema enjoyed a landmark moment at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2026, with Boong emerging as one of the event’s most celebrated films after securing three major awards.
The film earned Best Director for Lakshmipriya Devi, Best Debut Film, and Best Child Actor for young performer Gugun Kipgen, capping off an impressive run for the production on the international festival circuit.
The latest achievement comes months after Boong made headlines by winning a BAFTA in the Best Children’s and Family Film category, further strengthening the global presence of Manipuri storytelling.
Meanwhile, Baksho Bondi claimed the festival’s top honour for Best Film. Nikhil Yadav won Best Actor for Vimukt, while Meenakshi Jayan secured the Best Actress award for Victoria. The Best Screenplay trophy went to Nikhil Mahajan and Prajakt Deshmukh for Tighee.
In the documentary section, Deja Vu was named Best Documentary Feature, while Waai won Best Documentary Short. Jo’s Turn received the award for Best Narrative Short Film.
Held from May 28 to 31, NYIFF showcased 19 feature films, four documentaries and 27 short films spanning 15 Indian languages. Organisers said the festival reflected the growing international appeal of regional Indian cinema, with stories rooted in local cultures increasingly finding audiences worldwide.
For Manipuri cinema, however, the edition belonged unmistakably to Boong.
