Golaghat remains the worst-hit district as the Dhansiri stays in severe flood situation and the IMD warns of more rain in Upper Assam
Guwahati: Flooding continued across four districts of Assam on Wednesday, affecting more than 1.12 lakh people as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast moderate to heavy rain in several parts of the state.
The affected districts are Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar, with Golaghat accounting for more than 65,000 affected people. Sivasagar has nearly 20,000 affected residents, while Nagaon has more than 16,000.
The IMD’s Guwahati centre has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and moderate to heavy rain in parts of Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar and Tinsukia. Authorities have warned that flooding could spread to additional areas as several rivers remain above danger levels.
At Numaligarh in Golaghat, the Dhansiri remains in a “severe flood situation”, with water levels continuing to rise. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has advised residents to avoid going near the river.
The flood-related death toll remained unchanged at 101, with no fresh fatalities reported in the latest bulletin. The Dhansiri at Numaligarh and the Kushiyara at Sribhumi are flowing above their respective danger levels.
Relief operations are continuing through 92 relief camps and distribution centres, providing assistance to 30,205 people. Over the past 24 hours, authorities distributed 420.32 quintals of rice, 74.72 quintals of dal, 22.42 quintals of salt and 2,058.95 litres of mustard oil.
Floodwaters have inundated 441 villages and damaged 10,879.03 hectares of agricultural land. Several embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure have also been affected, while 31,650 livestock and poultry have suffered losses.
