Heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast over the next three to four days, with orange alerts issued for parts of Assam and neighbouring states amid fears of fresh flooding and landslides
Guwahati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast another spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall across Assam and neighbouring northeastern states over the next three to four days, raising concerns over fresh flooding, flash floods, waterlogging and landslides.
According to the IMD, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms is expected between July 30 and August 1 across parts of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. The weather system over neighbouring states is likely to influence several districts in Upper Assam.
An orange alert has been issued for Tinsukia district in Assam. Similar alerts are in force for Mon, Mokokchung and Wokha in Nagaland, where runoff could affect Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.
The IMD has also forecast heavy rainfall in East Siang, Lohit, Namsai, Longding, Papumpare, Lower Subansiri and Lower Dibang Valley in Arunachal Pradesh. Resulting runoff may impact Tinsukia, Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) warned that the rainfall could trigger urban flooding, flash floods, traffic disruptions and localised landslides. District administrations have been placed on alert, while residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain vigilant and follow official advisories.
