With nearly 500 schools affected and over 70,000 students impacted, the district administration has sought to keep flood-hit schools closed until August 10.
Guwahati: The Sivasagar district administration has sought a 10-day extension of the summer vacation for schools severely affected by the ongoing floods, citing concerns over students’ safety and the need to restore damaged educational institutions.
According to the district administration, nearly 500 schools have been impacted by the floods, disrupting the education of more than 70,000 students.
Sivasagar Inspector of Schools Samiran Bora has written to the Directorate of Secondary Education and the Directorate of Elementary Education, requesting approval to extend the vacation for flood-affected schools until August 10.
The administration said the additional time is required to clean school premises, repair flood-related damage and ensure a safe environment before classes resume.
Schools that have not been affected by the floods are expected to reopen as scheduled on August 1, subject to approval of the extension request.
If approved, the decision will provide temporary relief to students, parents and school authorities as the district continues recovery efforts following one of the worst flood spells in recent years.
