Manipur government spokesperson Sapam Ranjan urges JFD to hold off its deadline as the organisation presses for a 1951-based NRC before the Census

Imphal: The Manipur government has appealed to the Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) to put its September 30 deadline on hold, saying the state administration is pursuing the organisation’s demand for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before the Census.
Government spokesperson and MLA Sapam Ranjan made the appeal on Saturday, urging the JFD to give the government additional time to take up the matter with the Centre. The demand has gained momentum in recent weeks, with the JFD Women’s Wing seeking support from legislators for its “No NRC, No Census” campaign.
A key demand of the JFD is that the NRC be updated using 1951 as the base year before Census operations begin in Manipur. The organisation’s five-point memorandum also calls for preservation of the original 1951 NRC records, a state population policy and strengthening of the Manipur State Population Commission.
The campaign has secured support from 18 MLAs, according to reports, with several legislators signing declarations backing the demand. The MLA said the government was taking the concerns seriously and urged the JFD to cooperate rather than intensify its agitation.
The JFD, meanwhile, has maintained that Census operations should remain on hold until the NRC is updated and has sought a clear timeline and formal assurance from the government.
