Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation demands a formal Centre commitment to a 1951-based NRC and threatens government office boycott if its deadline is missed
Imphal: The Campaign for Just and Fair Delimitation (JFD) has decided to intensify its agitation for an updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur, following Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam’s assurance in the Assembly that 1951 would be used as the base year.
At a public meeting in Imphal East on Monday, the JFD adopted a seven-point resolution demanding that the state government secure a formal commitment from the Centre by September 10, 2026, along with a tentative timeline for the NRC update.
JFD convenor Jeetendra Ningomba said the organisation would intensify its campaign if the deadline is not met. From September 11, it plans to enforce a ban on employees attending state and Central government offices, while exempting essential services including healthcare, education, water supply, electricity, fire services and agriculture.
The JFD also called for the deferment of census-related activities and said house-listing or population enumeration before the NRC update would be opposed.
Meanwhile, protests continued across Manipur. A boat rally was held at Loktak Lake, while torch rallies were organised in Thoubal district. Protesters demanded a formal Assembly resolution supporting implementation of the 1951-based NRC.
