Preliminary talks with the Asian Development Bank are underway to prepare a blueprint for faster connectivity between key growth areas
Guwahati: Assam is exploring the possibility of developing a regional rapid transit system on the lines of the Delhi–Meerut RRTS, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on September 18.
The Chief Minister said preliminary discussions are underway with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to prepare a blueprint for a potential high-speed regional transport network connecting key growth areas across the state.
“An Assam Rapid Transit System (RRTS), on the lines of Delhi–Meerut? Preliminary talks with @ADB_HQ are underway to chart a blueprint for sustainable transport connecting key growth areas,” the Chief Minister said in a post on X.
However, he did not disclose proposed routes, cities or growth centres, estimated project costs or a potential implementation timeline.
The Delhi–Meerut RRTS provides rapid regional connectivity between Delhi and major urban centres in the National Capital Region. Assam’s proposed system could similarly link important economic and urban hubs if the project moves forward.
The Chief Minister said the discussions with the ADB remain at a preliminary stage and further details will be shared as the proposal develops.
