Assam CM asks Congress-led governments to resign and demands the party boycott upcoming elections if it does not trust CEC Gyanesh Kumar

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma challenged Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to agree to fresh Assembly elections in Assam using ballot papers, amid opposition protests against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
“If Rahul Gandhi gets rid of the Congress government in Kerala, I am ready. I am prepared to contest an election in Assam using ballot papers,” the CM said, challenging the Congress to resign from the states where it holds power and face fresh elections.
The Chief Minister also asked Congress to demand the resignation of its governments in Karnataka and Telangana, as well as its allies in other states, and boycott upcoming Assembly elections if Gyanesh Kumar remains the CEC.
Defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, he cited historical concerns over the inclusion of foreign nationals in Assam’s voter list and alleged that cross-border infiltration had contributed to demographic changes in the region. He rejected opposition allegations of voter suppression and pointed to the BJP’s recent electoral victories as evidence of public support.
The Chief Minister also accused the Congress of targeting constitutional institutions, including the Election Commission, Parliament and the Supreme Court. He described the opposition’s campaign as politically motivated and alleged, without presenting evidence publicly in his remarks, that foreign powers were supporting efforts to destabilise the government.
The confrontation comes amid a wider political dispute over electoral roll revisions, the use of electronic voting machines and demands for accountability from the Election Commission.
